Biography

Brenda Avadian, MA
The Caregiver's Voice

Brenda Avadian, MA is the author of eight books and a spokesperson for caregivers and their loved ones with dementia. She has achieved an international reputation for her passion, enthusiasm, and tireless efforts to help caregivers.

She moved her father from his Wisconsin home of 45 years into her California home in 1996 and cared for him until his passing in 2001. Today, she is invited to speak about her experiences and lesson learned, presenting an endearing portrait of the trials of caregiving balanced by her search for the JOY in life's most difficult challenges. And she's not the only one.

In the groundbreaking Finding the JOY series, caregivers share the JOYFUL times in order to dry their tears with laughter. Finding the JOY in Alzheimer's: Caregivers share the JOYFUL times and Finding the JOY in Alzheimer's: When Tears are Dried with Laughter. More books in the Finding the JOY series are planned.

The second edition of the acclaimed and internationally sold, "Where's my shoes?" My Father's Walk Through Alzheimer's is unique due to the REAL-TIME unfolding of the caregiving experience. Brenda continues to donate a significant portion of the gross sales proceeds of these books, worldwide.

Before she was a caregiver, Brenda coached others to become better leaders and communicators, first as a college professor and then as a consultant and corporate trainer. In 1989, she was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel for her contributions to public service. Since 1998, she has served an award-winning member of Toastmasters International holding various officer positions and achieving the Advanced Toastmaster Gold designation.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Brenda earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She met her husband, David Borden in Milwaukee. They live with their orange tabby cat on five acres in the Angeles National Forest in southern California, where Brenda is training for the 2010 Los Angeles Marathon.
